VFD has hosted the Albany County Firemen's Convention three times in its history. A large undertaking, it was rotated through the many departments during the years, and awarded to us in 1987, 1994 and in our centennial year of 2002. A mardi gras parade, a very large dress parade, meetings for both Departments and Auxiliaries, as well as a dinner and carnival on both Friday and Saturday nights of the Convention.
Annually, the VFD hosts a Sunday morning Breakfast with Santa Claus in December at the firehouse. All are welcomed - especially those who need to speak with Santa about the upcoming Christmas holiday.
The Department regularly performs a highway cleanup (Adopt-A-Highway) on the main route through the Village - route 85A between the Village lines from Scotch Pine out to Urbandale past the elementary school.
A fun time is had each year when we host our annual Harvest Dance at the firehouse. A "fall-themed" event, our engine room is cleared out and re-decorated as befits the season and the music and snacks and refreshments help all who attend to have a wonderful evening. Look for signs going up each October! Beginning in 2019 we had a new 'fall-themed' event that we call Fall Fest. A musical affair with a couple of tents and several circles of seating and fire pits for the evening chill with some food items as well as beer and hard ciders was very well-received.
The VFD supports National Fire Prevention Week by hosting trips by the Voorheesville elementary school classes to the firehouse. Members provide tours and explanations as well as fire prevention materials to all visiting children.
As part of Fire Prevention Month, the VFD holds an Open House each October, where the public is invited to come over and tour the firehouse, see our equipment, have a close look at some of our neighboring departments equipment, and even take firetruck rides with their children. A good day to share with the whole family.
Our annual Spaghetti Dinner is held usually on the same day as the Open House. The public is invited to share a family-style supper with salad, bread and spaghetti with locally made sauce (Pizza by Dominic) all made fresh for a very small donation.
Voorheesville FD, in partnership with the American Red Cross, hosts Blood Drives on a regular basis at the firehouse. Past donors are contacted by members of the department to schedule their appointment, after verification of eligibility by the Red Cross, and walk-ins are always welcome. Please stay tuned to this website for announcements of upcoming Drives.
